Brief info

The staff at the History Center were deeply saddened upon receiving the news of Mary Ann Carroll's passing on December 4, 2019. Mary Ann Carroll had been a dedicated member of the esteemed Florida Highwaymen artists group, who regularly visited the museum for Meet & Greet events biannually.

Carroll was born in 1940 in Georgia, being raised by sharecroppers who later relocated to Fort Pierce. Among a collective of 26 African American artists, known today as the Florida Highwaymen, she stood as the sole female member. During the 1950s and 1960s, these artists defied the prevailing norms of the Jim Crow South by creating and selling timeless Florida landscapes. The majority of these talented individuals hailed from the Fort Pierce region.
