Brief info

Despite not being very well-known, John Maynor became famous later in life for his work as a painter in the Florida Highwaymen group and is now considered one of the most famous painters in the U. S "His artwork, Two Egrets in a Swamp, Poinciana Trees, has been put on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D. C"

I was born in Springfield, Georgia. In 1948, Maynor's grandparents took the family to live in Fort Pierce, Florida. Maynor grew up in 1957 with artists who became known as the Highwaymen. He always wanted to paint. He didn't like school except for science and art. He was good at drawing as a kid, and his drawings showed his talent early on. He was interviewed by The Highwaymen Trail just a year before he died.

Fort Pierce was a good place for the young artist to learn from other painters. Maynor learned a lot from Alfred Hair, Livingston Roberts, and Sam Newton. They taught him how to paint quickly, and he started selling his paintings with other artists.
