Brief info
Al Black stands out among the renowned group of 26 Florida Highwaymen painters not only for his vibrant artworks but also for his captivating and occasionally tumultuous life journey.
Black, who was born in 1947 near Jackson, Miss., had a humble beginning with no indication of his future as an artist. During his teenage years, he worked as a fieldworker, harvesting vegetables and fruits, and later transitioned to various driving roles. In the early 1960s, he arrived in Fort Pierce and found employment at the Fort Pierce Typewriter Company, where he initially worked as a typewriter cleaner and mover. Known for his persuasive skills, he soon convinced the company to hire him as a salesman. It was during this period in Fort Pierce that Black crossed paths with Alfred Hair, marking the beginning of his journey with the Highwaymen.
