Lemuel Newton, the youngest of the three Newton brothers who are renowned as Highwaymen artists, was born in 1950 and raised in Tifton, Ga. Despite his significance as an original Florida Highwaymen painter and being the brother of the famous Highwaymen artist Harold Newton, there has been limited information published about him over the years.
Harold Newton, who was 16 years older than Lemuel, relocated from Tifton to Fort Pierce, Florida in 1950, the same year Lemuel was born. Although the impact Harold had on his younger brother's artistic development during his teenage years is evident, there is limited information available about Lemuel's childhood in Georgia.
Newton became a resident of Fort Pierce during the 1960s, joining his elder brother. During this time, he and fellow artist Willie Reagan started earning money by preparing artist Alfred Hair's Upson board surfaces. As time went on, Newton progressed to learning the art of painting from his brother Harold. According to The Highwaymen Trail, an organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Highwaymen painters, Newton held great admiration for his older brother. In fact, he expressed that both he and Sam would have had no knowledge of painting if it weren't for Harold's guidance.
