About Florida Highwaymen
The Florida Highwaymen were a group of African American artists who emerged in the 1950s and 1960s in Florida, particularly around the Fort Pierce area. They are renowned for their vibrant and expressive landscape paintings, which often depict the natural beauty of Florida’s coastal scenes, including its marshes, palm trees, and vibrant sunsets.
What sets the Highwaymen apart is not just their artistic talent, but also the unique circumstances under which they worked. In an era of segregation and limited opportunities for African Americans, these artists found a way to make a living by selling their artwork directly to the public. They traveled along highways, hence the name “Highwaymen,” selling their paintings from the trunks of their cars or along the side of the road. This entrepreneurial spirit allowed them to bypass the traditional gallery system and connect directly with buyers.
While the Highwaymen initially faced challenges due to racial discrimination and the lack of recognition from the mainstream art world, their work eventually gained widespread acclaim. Today, their paintings are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike, and they are recognized as an important part of Florida’s cultural heritage.
The Highwaymen artists often painted on inexpensive materials such as Upson board or masonite, using a distinctive style characterized by bold brushstrokes and vivid colors. Their paintings typically feature dynamic compositions, with sweeping landscapes and dramatic skies that capture the essence of Florida’s natural beauty.
Despite their humble beginnings, the legacy of the Florida Highwaymen endures as a testament to the power of creativity, perseverance, and resilience in the face of adversity. Their story serves as a reminder of the transformative potential of art to transcend boundaries and bring people together.
